Once Upon a Time is officially my favorite Fall 2011 show (sorry, Revenge and 2 Broke Girls)! Sure, the premise is far from original, what with the whole “fairy tale characters trapped in the real world” sitch (Enchanted — the antagonists are even eerily similar!) and alternating between two timelines (Lost — which is understandable, because they have similar producers), but it’s just so brilliantly done! And all fiction nowadays (books, films, TV shows, etc.) is but a rehash of old ideas anyway, so this little thing can be overlooked. Since no idea is original anymore, it all comes down to execution. And this show is flawlessly executed.
Because I’m a classic girl and love all things fairy tale-ish and romantic, as all classic girls do, I was expecting something classic girls would enjoy, but I was pleasantly surprised to know that it’s so much more than your average, Disney-produced, hyper-idealistic type of story. I think even men would enjoy this one.
It’s so much darker and, believe it or not, deals with issues such as holding grudges, bitterness, and how holding on to these things can turn decent people into terrible ones. Also, it shows how forgiveness can really stop a person from doing things they think will vindicate them (hurting others to get even) but they will ultimately regret later on, and therefore cause them much suffering in the future. In other words: to forgive is to live. Really, really live.
Also, as a vocal advocate for adoption, I really appreciate the stand and values they’re putting forth regarding the issue. :)
I can’t wait for Episode 9! Here’s to creative, wonderful, well-done TV shows with substance.
